lyrics

He never thought that he would ever live his fondest dream
Why'd they come to occupy the bench space next to him?
He made a scene from simple lines they smiled to see
He never new true joy 'til someone said "Make one for me..."

Tender looks daily fell upon his face and hands
Awakening within him what no grownup understands
So energized by eyes lined up so stunningly
He didn't notice he'd begun to lose his novelty

Just an anachronism living in an unforgiving world
Here's a self-sunk nuh-uh dreamboat with seven 5th grade girls

A pastry torn and taken like a promised couple's cake
Endless situations only men upstairs could make
He can't believe that she turned down the open gym
He can't believe he heard her stammer "I'm being with him."

Interviewed for purposes uncertain to the host
Her videocassette possessed by every moments ghost
Just when he thinks he's found the phrase of perfect shape
He lifts his face to see that she has just run out of tape

Just an anachronism living in an unforgiving world
Here's a self-sunk nuh-uh dreamboat with seven 5th grade girls

One girl whimpered "Call me..."
One gave a quick embrace
One pledged her affection with an odd-expressioned face
One had a wall reserved for drawings he'd done
But within a month she'd hung some pop-teen's new poster
In his scribbled picture's place
One girl had a mother that said "He's a little strange..."
One left for the summer and came back completely changed
When only one remained
One was enough
To remind him
To remind him
To remind him

A closer look would show his open book goes never read
His eyes slide off the pages and he scans the streets instead
He wonders why their passings-through are now so few
He doesn't see the subtle changes in each face he drew

Just an anachronism living in an unforgiving world
Here's a self-sunk nuh-uh dreamboat with seven 5th grade girls
