lyrics

The limp, empty swing still attempted to soar
'Cause Audrey was in it but minutes before
It cradled and carried her up 'til she leapt
Thus leaving an absence it could not accept

The rusted chains and rubber seat just tremble in her wake
Like grieving lips and grinding, lonesome groans
Audrey runs from ride to ride and wonder why they break
The swing too weak to rise
It's weak for want of eyes

The kids on the slide seemed unable to slip
It sensed Audrey on it and wanted to grip
But she wriggled free from the bent, buckled tin
Then glanced back, half-baffled, at the twist that it's in

The twice-retired attendant took it down to make repairs
But every heckled effort was in vain
Audrey dodged the onslaught of the children's vicious stares
The swing too weak to rise
It's weak for want of eyes

It's no fun to be alone and bare the night like naked bone
And having neither flesh nor blood to wear
There she comes, she has a way when
Her fingers clutch them as she plays and
You could almost swear they come alive

You could almost say she's in their arms, but then
That wouldn't make a lotta sense- you'd seem so strange
Wait'll she grows up and he's alone again
Betcha see a subtle change
See a subtle change

The swings and the slide- heck, the whole jungle gym
Stand judged by the city, sitting "Fit To Condemn"
But they turn away to avoid the the results
As listless kids sicken and then turn to adults

Audrey's torn the park apart but she won't bare the blame
Now she's been banned and cannot come around
Audrey runs from ride to ride that somehow aren't the same
The swing too weak to rise
It's weak for want of eyes

Audrey got up late to walk her dog, but then
She found the broken swing and slide at her back door
They could be fixed up- the swing could soar again
Watch her press upon the sky
Press upon the sky
Press upon-
Press upon-
She leaps- she leaps-
She-
Uh-oh! Woah--

She lets it rust and stack
"Til there's no turning back
Oh, she knows
But she throws it all out anyway-
